WHAT IS 'REVAMP THE VALLEY'?
Revamp The Valley ("RTV") began as a community group in April, 2017 to encourage residents of the Fish Hoek Valley to engage in community-building and improvement projects.
The initial focus was on developing and improving the open space at Steenbok Way, Fish Hoek - the progress of that project can be seen on our PROJECTS page.
In January 2018, Revamp registered as a non-profit under the Non-Profit Organisations Act, 1997 (Act 71 of 1997), South Africa.
WHAT IS 'COMMUNITY DEMOCRACY'?
The legacy of apartheid’s discriminatory legislative and planning framework is clear, with little being done to fully integrate communities, provide skills development and include the younger generation into local governance.
The lack of work opportunities is linked to an increase in crime and drug abuse, which in turn deepens levels of mistrust between the different communities.
Building a culture of community democracy is viewed as an effective way to combat these challenges. A community democracy is understood as existing when residents can find/create solutions for themselves by building networks between groups and acting in a respectful way to create a community that benefits all while addressing basic human needs.
Specifically, it encompasses:
-
A culture of volunteerism, activism and shared endeavours.
-
Grassroots engagement where people uncover, activate and energise community assets.
-
Individual and community responsibility for formal and informal decision-making processes.
-
Communities working together constructively, without regard for socioeconomic differences.
-
Broad and deep public inclusion as the core of all engagement.
-
Responsibility for change resides in the hands of community members.

WHERE IS 'THE VALLEY'?
The Valley refers to a specific region of the Western Cape Peninsula and encompasses the valley stretching from the False Bay coastline at Fish Hoek and Clovelly eastwards to Noordhoek; north from the lower reaches of the Silvermine Nature Reserve, south to Brakkloof Ridge.
This valley is a microcosm of South Africa - with suburbs created by apartheid-era laws, a socio-economic diversity reflecting all strata of the country, and a demographic that crosses every age group, with a majority under the age of 49. Limited employment opportunities means the only commercial town with a transport hub, Fish Hoek, serves as the heart of the Valley region.
